Even advanced English learners make these common grammar mistakes. Let's fix them once and for all!
1. Their vs. There vs. They're
This is probably the most common mistake, even among native speakers!
Their = possessive (belonging to them)
There = location or existence
They're = they are
✅ "Their house is beautiful."
✅ "The book is over there."
✅ "They're coming to the party."
2. Its vs. It's
Another tricky pair that confuses many learners.
Its = possessive (belonging to it)
It's = it is OR it has
✅ "The cat licked its paw."
✅ "It's raining outside."
✅ "It's been a long day."
3. Subject-Verb Agreement
The verb must agree with the subject in number (singular/plural).
❌ "Everyone have their own opinion."
✅ "Everyone has their own opinion."
❌ "The group of students are waiting."
✅ "The group of students is waiting."
4. Using "Much" vs. "Many"
Much = uncountable nouns
Many = countable nouns
✅ "How much water do you drink?"
✅ "How many bottles of water do you drink?"
5. Double Negatives
In standard English, avoid using two negatives together.
❌ "I don't have no money."
✅ "I don't have any money." OR "I have no money."
Mastering these common mistakes will significantly improve your English accuracy. Practice identifying them in your writing!
